"Preparedness education for a younger generation."

There are many different reasons why we homeschool. (There's a post about it coming soon, I assure you.) One of those reasons is that there are things that my children will learn in public school that I don't want them to learn, such as bad habits and destructive ideologies society thinks is perfectly acceptable. But there are also very basic things that I do want them to learn that I just don't have time to teach them in the few hours I'd have to compete with their attention between everything from neighborhood friends to swim lessons. Things like responsibility, accountability, and, perhaps most importantly,

That is why we approach our homeschool curriculum a little differently than most.

Traditionally, we use out of the box Math and Phonics curriculum (for my Kindergartener). We even use some Language Arts curriculum for Grammar and Spelling for my 5th grader. However, when it comes to science, history, literature, social studies, and physical education we expand our units into areas that center on one thing:

SELF-RELIANCE

Our unit studies are broken down as follows:
  • Healthy Habits- establishing healthy routines and accountability
  • Why We Prep- the importance of being prepared for emergencies
  • Water- where our water comes from and what happens when it's not available
  • Extreme Weather- tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and blizzards
  • Other Natural Disasters- earthquakes, forrest fires, power outages, and resource shortages
  • Emergency Kits and Planning- 72 hour kits, deciding when to stay and when to go
  • Shelter In Place- how to set up your home to wait out a disaster
  • 3 Month Food Supply- developing a 3 month supply of foods you normally eat
  • Long Term Food Storage- storing a year supply of meats, grains, beans, and vegetables
  • Evacuations and Wilderness Survival- bug out bags and how to survive in the woods
  • Gardening
  • Canning, Freezing, Drying and other Food Preservation
  • Provident Living- learning how to live with less and basic home economic skills
  • Physical Fitness- how to prevent illness and injury and help our bodies last
  • Financial Preparation- emergency savings and budgeting
  • Worst Case Scenario- fun lessons for when crazy stuff happens
And as our children get older we will also branch out into more advanced studies such as relationships, parenting, and skills training. Our overall goal as home educators is to help our children become the best version of themselves. To help them become the people they were meant to be. We strongly believe that this will be best accomplished by instilling in our children a sense of responsibility and accountability. By teaching them to how to sustain themselves, accompanied by a deep sense of virtue ethics, they will be better prepared with the compassion and knowledge they need to help those around them.

As we go through each of these unit studies, I'll be adding resources to the links at the right. These will include lesson plans with everything from Language Arts unit studies on books like Out of the Dust and The Girl Who Owned a City to science experiments on extreme weather to online resources and videos about the water cycle. Stay tuned to see what we come up with next!
